As you asked for a safer way, my advice would be to split both disks with one Windows partition and one (or more) Ubuntu ones on each. I have another disk with windows 8 and ubuntu 12.04. You could use virtual machine software instead of setting up a dual-boot system, but a dual-boot system lets you actually use both operating systems on your hardware at full, native speed. Certain computers allow you to do it by pressing a key then choosing the device to boot from but some of them will only let you choose if you wish to The disk used for that install can be physical or virtual.
Just a suggestion - I don't know if this is possible. Install OS2. Dual Boot Mac OS X and Windows: The Boot Camp utility included with Mac OS X allows you to easily set up a Windows dual-boot system on your Mac. If I go ahead and try either I'll report back.
